So Jack Torrence hasnt had a drink in months (forced to quit due to excessive fukk ups) still trying to control his mood and anger issues, staying busy. He's on the roof of the hotel replacing shingles and sees a huge wasp nest. He looks at it for a while and begins to have thoughts about what if the swarm of wasps surprised him and began to attack (while desperately wanting a drink)
This October will make 10 years since i had alcohol.. i just thought this was the PERFECT analogy about what it's like being a dry drunk trying to stay sober. Even the part about being "panicky" and "not knowing your footing" and "accidentally causing your own death".. basically your mind giving you every excuse in the world to just have a drink, anything to numb the pain because life just won't stop stinging you

Could you be expected to behave as a thinking man while your hand was being impaled by redhot wasps? Could you be expected to live in the love of your nearest and dearest when the brown, furious swarm rose out of the hole in the fabric of things (the fabric you thought was so innocent) and arrowed straight at you? Could you be held responsible for your own actions as you ran crazily about on the sloping roof seventy feet above the ground, not knowing where you were going, not remembering that your panicky, stumbling feet could lead you crashing and blundering right over the rain gutter and down to your death on the concrete seventy feet below? Jack didn’t think so. When you unwittingly stuck your hand into the wasps’ nest, you hadn’t made a covenant with the devil to give up your civilized self with its trappings of love and respect and honor. It just sorta happened to you.
Passively, with no say, you ceased to be a creature of the mind and became a creature of the nerve endings;
