49ers wide receiver Randy Moss doesn’t talk to the media much these days, but the occasions when he does are usually good for something more than the usual bland platitudes we hear from many of his fellow professional athletes.

With Super Bowl Media Day upon us, Moss couldn’t avoid reporters on Tuesday. He didn’t disappoint, especially when it came time for him to answer a question about his place in football history.

“I do think I’m the greatest receiver ever to play this game,” Moss said.

There are plenty of guys who would likely argue their case against Moss and the one with the best argument of all didn’t wait long to fire back. Adam Schefter of ESPN was with Jerry Rice when word of Moss’ thoughts filtered back to the guy who is commonly referred to as the best receiver in history and passed along Rice’s thoughts.

“Put my numbers up against his numbers,” Rice said.

We side with Rice on this one thanks in part to the longevity and consistency he had in addition to his many physical gifts. Having said that, there haven’t been many football players able to take over games by themselves the way that Moss did when he was at his best. Any list of the best wideouts in history has to have Moss near the top to be taken seriously.

He might not be number 1, but he's number 2 max :manny:

Jerry didn't even wait for the comments to be reported before he got a response in :skip:

1) Jerry Rice
1a) Randy Moss

Nah because Randy was a one trick pony, he was nowhere near the complete package like Rice was.

Randy was a great player, but he was missing out on too many things that would make him up there with Rice.

False. This is just reciting the same talking points. Moss did all of those things well and what contributed to Rice consistent greatness was probably because he was playing with the GOAT QB ever and another top 10 QB.

What happened when Moss played with a top 5 QB? records were broken the first chance he got with a top QB

He didn't do any of those things as well as Rice, not even close.

As for consistency? Not even close, Moss is 35 now and he is nowhere near what Rice was producing at that age. Plus he fell off in Oakland, gave up on them and then wasted his year with NE/Minnesota/Tennessee.

Tell me when Moss gets 1000 at 40 years old.

Rice and MAUCE are probably top 2.

I liked MAUCE more, but I think Rice was better.

Jerry Rice has gotten REALLY sensitive in the last 3 years.

You don't really hear Wilt or Russell get all grumpy when shaq talks his accomplishments up.
