I know there are a few studios in the G-boro area you could get started at but as a career I would strongly recommend leaving the area and looking towards an area that has a need for audio engineers like Atlanta, Los Angeles, NYC or some major metropolitan area. Before the film tax incentive program Governor McCrory did not renew went away in NC last year you could've got steady work in Wilmington doing audio engineering for tv and film but all those productions and production companies moved to Georgia because of that.
I have a 9 to 5 in IT and that's what pays the bills for now. I do audio enigneering, production and videography on the side and get a little bit of change here and there but not enough to live off of at the moment . So get started by interning at any studio in the area, then network and meet people then move on once you are ready for the next step.
