Fukk your corny debates
First guy that comes to mind is Ice Cube. If he died around 92 or 93 he would've been deified as an iconic revolutionary figure. He dropped 3 incredible albums in a row, the first two considered classics by most. He was was down with the NOI he scared the government and had the FBI warning NWA about their lyrics, mostly written by him. He would've went down as the godfather of gangsta rap who died not giving a fukk as the nikka AmeriKKKa loved to hate. He legit scared white people. His face would be on t-shirts that hung in stores next to Bob Marley and Kurt Cobain.
But he didn't. He started doing a pale imitation of the Dre and Snoop g-funk sound. Then he started the corny ass Westsiiiiiiiiiide!!! Connection and got ethered by Common. The rest of his music career was forgettable. Then he turned into a fat actor and filmmaker of family movies and a Coors Light spokesman.
Another is T.I. If he died after King, he also would've been legendary and iconic. T.I.'s movement in the south from about 03-05 was phenomenal. King wasn't as good an album as Trap Muzik and Urban Legend, but his popularity apexed nationwide and he became a mainstream star. And he dropped one of the GOAT street anthems/club and whip bangers, arguably the best single of the decade (What U Know) which was huge. He was the closest thing the south had to what Biggie was to the east and Pac was to the west. Totally unfukkwitable.
Then his output got a lot more inconsistent. He dropped a couple of duds. He still had some heat, it was hit or miss. He did some things and found himself in situations that were unflattering...sometimes downright embarrassing--being scared to go all the way at Luda and got sonned on War With God, being a multiple felon and getting caught trying to buy a Rambo arsenal in a Walgreens parking lot, getting caught with molly, doing commercials for Atlanta crimestoppers, etc. And the worse imo, giving us the abomination that is Iggy Azalea. His whole "I'm sorry I keep doing dumb shyt and going to jail, please empathize with me, but I'm a G and if you dirispect me I'll shoot you" shtick got tired.
And his reality show has him looking like a peaceful family man just raising his kids in luxury. Nothing wrong with that of course.
the man. It's just that when you juxtapose that image to his music, which usually entails him being some kind of light-skinned O-Dog figure, it takes some of the edge of his rap persona.
