I don't think "Trap" music is so far removed from the other styles that preceded it
(Snap and Crunk for example) that it needs to be considered an entirely new genre.
If we omit trap then we can go just a lil further back and omit Pastor Troy, Lil Jon &
the eastside boyz or David banner, go even further back and you eliminate 3-6 Mafia etc.
And if Trap music isn't safe what about Hyphy music ? Do we go on a Bay Area purge next ?
Because that sounds pretty damn different from Eric B. And Rakim.
What about Bounce music ? What about Texas/Houston Screw ?
If you ask me "Trap" music fits in Hip Hop and where it fits is as a sub-genre.
"G-Funk (or really P funk...) is a sound and it sounds distinctly different from Boom Bap
and as it got more sophisticated you'd be hard pressed to say it's similar to that.
"Boom Bap" is a sound and it's distinctly different from the more 808 heavy
sound that preceded it in the 80's.
"Crunk" is a sound and it's very different from the sampled soul beats
of last decade not to mention they're two different styles that co-existed.
"Soul beats/Chip Munk" sound is different from Boom Bap as well, "Jazz Hop"
is different as is "Instrumental Hip Hop".
This list is not exhaustive and if you ask me they're all different but they all fit under the Hip Hop
umbrella. Not to mention they all have similar ideas musically from rapping to production tools.
And I gotta ask man what is your beef with "Turn up beats" or "Music for social settings" ?
I've noticed almost all of your posts concerning trap or really any party music are filled
with this disdain and scorn for music that's primarily made for parties and dancing.
Even then "Trap" is just a sound it has no bearing over what's rapped over it.
"Alright" from Kendrick's album sounds very contemporary and clearly borrows heavily from
the "Trap" sound yet the ideas communicated over it are pretty far removed from RHQ/Young Thug/Migos.
