I've been listening to a lot of Hip-Hop lately and outside of like a few really dope records, there seems to be this overriding trend of these really lazy sounding records with nothing but 808 beats and weird synth lines and an MC just spitting like "meh", or even worst, this half singing/half rapping kind of Drake, Fetty Wap, Future, type bullshyt.

I mean, the production's lazy, the lyrics are lazy. I had a headache after listening to the last A$AP Rocky joint. That shyt made me wanna slap @SirBiatch for having this nikka as his avatar.

Then, I was listening to the Earl Sweatshirt record and it's like more lazy, weird shyt with 808 beats.

:mindblown: Who the fukk are they impressing with this shyt? Who's buying this shyt.

Even the Vince Staples record was disappointing to me. A fukking long ass album with just weird ass beats and 808s and I'm like, "what the fukk, Hip-Hop".

On another note, that Ghostface/Badbadnotgood record is dope as fukk, so at least I got something to listen to.

I can support some of your points. I think part of the problem is TEMPO. The beats are so slow now, so the rapper doesn't have to rap at the pace they did in the 90's or early 2000's. Golden Age Hip Hop usually ran from 80-95 bpm (or 160-190). Nowadays, beats can be as slow as 50, and average at about 60-70. The lyrics CAN be lazy, definitely. To call the producers lazy though? That's not really fair. Some of the beats being made are very layered, and it's way less sample based. Arguably harder to make than a good sample-based beat.

I agree though, I was underwhelmed by Vince's new album, even though some songs I definitely liked, particularly Lift Me Up. Earl's new album was pretty much trash save a few songs. I almost think that Hip-Hop is in a "glam era", like rock was in the 80s. We're all waiting for a new, improved sound with classic Hip Hop in it. I don't count people like Joey Badass, who are really not doing anything new.

hip hop and rap music is just like this weird bizarre world now, i don't get it and i don't even try to comprehend it anymore. i've realized that this new shyt ain't for me and it really has been for a long time. it's like for a long time i'd been comparin' shyt to shyt. what's the difference between 1 pile of shyt and 2 piles of shyt other than the quantity? nothin. it's both shyt at the end of the day

i guess the best way to put it is, nothin' stays the same and i just realized it'll never be the same as it once 20 years ago and i've had to move on. i find the new shyt funny in a comedy kind of way but i still love and respect all the old hip hop classics from the late 80's into the the mid 90's

A lot of the beats though just sound like some 808s bouncing around and a weird synth sound and nothing else.

Sample based beats, at least in the pre-Fruity Loops days, required years of crate digging and spending thousands of hours in record stores to find a 2 or 3 second snippet of music.

Modern-day hiphop is purposely kept at a 6-grade level. Grown men are aiming to make music for 12-13 year olds

now THIS is a problem it seemed like in the '80s/90s, Hip-Hop was made by people in the late teens/20s for people in their late teens/20s.

Now it's dudes that are up to 45 years old making records for 14 year olds.

YOUNGER ARTISTS GREW UP LISTENING TO NOTHING BUT HIP HOP, SO ALL THEY KNOW IS HOW TO REHASH shyt THAT WAS ALREADY REHASHED, BROTHER!

This is probably the problem.
