'Real Time with Bill Maher' is so awful now

Don’t know if anyone still watches this show, but goddamn it’s terrible now.

I used to watch it religiously for years because before the rise of social media, it was one of the few tv programs that would sometimes cover certain issues of corporate and state systemic corruption that went unaddressed in mainstream media, and they would sometimes have some very good guests.

Now it’s just a forum for Maher and other centrist Dems and Repubs to lament the Democratic party moving too far to left, complain about political correctness and purity tests, overexaggerate the Russia shyt, and condescendingly offer terrible political advice about beating Trump.

Any time I checked it over the past year or so I see a gaggle of Heidi Heitkamps, Bari Weiss’s, Bret Stephens’s, and Michael Smerconish’s concern trolling about how nominating someone “too far to the left” will get Trump re-elected.

Crazy how this show went from being a leftist (considered at the time) oasis in the tv media world for a lot of young people when it debuted to a tone deaf centrist platform.

This week's episode was horrible.


I think the show suffers from:

1. Maher being so terrified by what has been happening in the Trump era that he thinks centrism is the answer (as if republicans didn't paint Hillary as a scary socialist and won't do the same to Biden)

2. Maher's feelings have been hurt by some leftists upset with his Islamophobic and other non-PC remarks. Now he spends half of each show railing against milennials and PCism and the metoo movement, and he has moved in a knee jerk fashion to the right on certain issues (student tuition and debt, for instance) just to oppose the people who hurt his feelings. It's pathetic.

I'm in the same boat as you, used to watch all the time, I haven't watched in a few years at this point, I've seen a couple YouTube clips here and there but have no interest in actually watching the show anymore

This week's episode was horrible.


I think the show suffers from:

but heres the thing, im like you, i used to think he or more so the show itself was really good. but looking back, i think its only because we didnt have any real outlets telling the truth like we do now because of the internet. because he had some opinons on politically incorrect that were crazy, not even the shyt he got fired for, that was actually the truth. but he said about Vietnam, oh sometimes you have to show your might as a nation, yeah lets just kill 2 million innocent people to show might as a nation, also he defended a women that had a relationship with an under age boy. pedo shyt. even rooting for a recsession, like trust me i wanna get trump the fukk outta here but rooting for a recession, i agree with cenk, it is like rooting for trump to be elected, millions of people will be fukked. and maher is like "its worth it" sure for you it is, you rich pos

@wtfyomom excellent point about there not being any other outlets like RT early on. He definitely did start out as a trailblazer even though I’ve always been rather weary of fake white liberals.

Plus truth be told, Democracy Now and Al Jazeera been around long enough to where we’ve had other options for better news/commentary for a minute now. Now he’s completely obsolete because of all these other sources. AND they’re better than him.

Personally tho, I won’t be satisfied until we get a Real Time/Young Turks type show for Black/Brown people. We really need an outlet like this for our people.

Dude is so out of touch its not even funny. All the shyt he's been talking bout for years about the Democrats being spineless and how they're just moderate Republicans. Now we have a new brand of bold progressives who have dominated the party platform and have gone mainstream and he wants to throw cold water on it.

Dude thinks shyt is like it was 10 years ago. The Democrats have policy proposals that can excite the working class white people that Republicans and Trump have been able to steal. Hell conservatives are much more open to some kind of universal health care system than they've ever been. Does he not see the lack of excitement for moderste Dems?

Previous week tried to say Palestinian support is ahistorical as if this conflict didnt begin with the proposal to uproot people from their land and as if Israel today isn't today confiscating land in the moderate West Bank.

Another dumb shyt he said yesterday was suggesting American billionaires should purchase the Amazon to save it. As if this problem hasn't already been caused by privatization. Dude is a completely bigoted and out of touch moron at this point.

Yeah I agree, I thought he was lefty until I heard real lefties consistently. He would have real ones on like Ralph Nader and Cornell West but I remember specifically him having a segment where he and Michael Moore I think begged Nader not to run again. So he was always an establishment hack I just didn't know any better at the time.
Stopped watching like 5, 6 years ago. The Islamaphobia was just over the top.
