Realistically how hard is it to start a business?

Thats a general question but im speaking more on the lines of computer programming type entrepeneurship...i got a BBA in programming so i got a lil bit background in it but thats it basically....im working now on a government gig but its not what i want to do...anybody who has successfully done this wanna help me out and give me some advice? It will be appreciated....
