You are so consumed by your hate for religion that you are not living in reality.

Just because people don't hate it don't mean they follow it .

Not living in reality is being so fuuuuuked in the head that you can't even be content with making the most of this life.

You have to do your best to follow the carrot in front of the donkey that your afterlife will BE SO MUCH BETTER because you can't maxmize your time in the here and now.

Its all a pie in the sky.

You dont talk like a good person so you cant be.

I thought actions made you a good person.

Its just language fukk boy. Can you handle it?

Like I said...you need the promise of someone watching you to not be a dikk to your fellow man.

I'm content with not trying to get a cookie and pat on the back ...you on the other hand can't be trusted to do the reasonable thing without your sky pimp approving of it. :usure:

You've been listening too much star and buckwild. :ld:

I think you need to stop thinking so much because your thoughts are misguiding you and for someone whos read the Bible more than i have you seem ignorant on alot of the teachings concerning language. Please refrain from using profanity so you can get respect as a man. You sound embarrassing right now hooting and hollering over such a casual exchange. Lets make like the volume is too loud, and turn that down.

I believe that everybody should have a moral compass independent of religion.

That's not to undermine anyone's faith or religious beliefs but that way, even if you lose faith, it won't leave you unstable, malicious, or depressed.

I think that if there was a benevolent Creator, he would appreciate people who try to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing to do moreso than people who do the right thing (or even the wrong thing) because of their religious doctrine.

For example, there's plenty of stories about God in the Old Testament having children killed or sanctioning rape. To me, that contrasts with "God is love".

If the Creator of the Universe was not the God of the Bible and asks me why I believed in worshipping a god who murdered children, I don't know what I'd say. I'd find it much easier to answer the God of the Bible if he asks me why I didn't strictly adhere to his Word and hope he would accept my answer.

Even though I feel like @Napoleon is being kind of combative, I've always had the same question. I don't consider myself religious but I'm definitely not an atheist--and the reason I haven't been able to get with Christianity like that is because I don't understand how people can choose a religion where so much of what they do is considered wrong. Premarital sex is a great example. If you truly believe in the Bible, then it's a sin. So shouldn't you NOT EVER do it (or at least try to?) I'm not even saying you have to stone women or anything, I'm talking about people dealing with their own actions. I like a lot of the messages in the Bible but the idea that not having sex until I get married makes me a better person is just ehhh.

I just feel like, if I really wanted to be a Christian, I'd have to stop doing a lot of things that I have no desire to stop doing. And I don't see how not doing those things would make me more moral, or a better person. Like, would God want a person who has premarital sex but whose life is dedicated to making the world a better place, or a person who DOESN'T have premarital sex but doesn't do anything with their life? Like they don't hurt the world but they don't help it either.

Maybe my line of thinking is too narrow?
That line of thinking isn't narrow at all, its the exact opposite. You're being open-minded and thinking critically about things, which are traits that can sometimes be discouraged by religion since unwavering faith is usually seen as a positive.

This post does not even make sense. If someone follows a religion they clearly agree with the views of it. The idea that you're saying they are not making a choice does not make sense.

False. 95% of christians have premarital sex even though the bible forbids it. Thats just one example...People pick and choose which parts of religion they want to follow.

nikkas is really excited about spending the rest of eternity worshipping someone. It's unfathomable to me how someone could seriously be excited about being in church 24/7.

Nonsense. How many openly atheist TV personalities dissing religion do you see? People promote God and religion all over TV all the time. Even :comeon: and :skip: speak on the Bible and religion often on First Take. Don't act like a couple of primetime sitcoms make up the entirety of television programming

There is no doubt that religiosity is more pervasive and dominant in society than the opposite. Something like less than 10% of people are atheists. Being an atheist is still taboo for many people at work or even in their homes.

And religion has a huge effect on politics and government. Politicians gets elected to Congress by appealing to religiosity, and you see a sustained effort to introduce creationism into classrooms. A lot of the inertia you see in Congress today is in large part derived from an appeal to the backwards redneck constituencies of many Republicans who compromise with Obama is blasphemous because he's a godless evildoer. One of the two major parties (GOP) basically is essentially a quasi-religious outfit.

The 75% support among the public that the Iraq War had before they went in based upon lies was in large part predicated upon an anti-Muslim religious fervor among the overwhelmingly Christian electorate of American.

If I'm not mistaken, there is only ONE openly atheist person in Congress today...Pete Stark. There are probably more, but they're scared to "come out" which speaks volumes about the gravity held by religion in our society.

It was only less than 25 years ago when the fukking President of the United States (George Bush Sr.) said atheists shouldn't even be considered Americans.

Things are changing thankfully, and more Americans are abandoning religion. The only person who needs to stop being butthurt is you and just accept that.

If anyone thinks our society promotes or celebrates atheism, I just have one bit of advice for you

Get off the fukking internet. The internet is the only place you'll find outspoken atheists. Why? Because in life, many people you otherwise have professional or personal relationships will look at you differently if they knew what you really felt/believed. Everywhere, esp in the US

Our society is still changing and more and more I see atheists being outspoken offline.

You can say that the religious are currently the most popular offline but you can't deny that atheists are getting more and more outspoken offline.
