A young jihadist suicide bomber was captured on video, crying and being comforted by fellow militants before he was sent to his death in war-torn Syria. While it seems the young man is afraid to die, the jihadist said he was more afraid he would fail in his mission.
Reportedly, the young fighter was Jafar al-Tayyar, in his 20s and from Uzbekistan, although some media reports are saying he was in his teens. He was captured on video as he climbed into an explosives-packed armored personnel carrier, ready to launch a deadly attack on the Shi’ite town of Fua in Idlib Province in Syria. Reportedly, Fua is an Assad regime stronghold.
Just before the young man climbs into the personnel carrier, he starts to sob and is comforted by his fellow militants, with one saying to the suicide bomber: “Jafar, my brother, don’t be afraid. When you are scared, remember Allah.”
Older bearded jihadis encourage the teenager and pat him on the back, while others hug the suicide bomber, smiling at him.
According to the Mirror Online, the suicide bomber responded, “I’m just scared I won’t succeed.” In the video footage at the end of this article, it is clear that al-Tayyar did, indeed, succeed in his mission.
Al-Tayyar drives into the distance and footage shows the explosion as he detonates the explosives in the personnel carrier. A huge mushroom cloud appears in the sky, followed by his fellow jihadis storming the village’s defenses. It is unknown how many people were killed or injured in the blast.
Speaking of the suicide bomber, a narrator on the video footage says he is the “first volunteer mujahid (jihad fighter) of Mawarannahr.” This term reportedly refers to jihadists from an area of Central Asia which includes Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, southern Kyrgyzstan, and southwest Kazakhstan.
The suicide bomber in question was a fighter for the Imam Bukhari Jamaat, which reportedly is a Uzbek-led faction currently fighting alongside the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.
According to Radio Free Europe, terror groups, including ISIS, often use foreign-born jihadists in suicide bomb attacks and as front-line fighters in offensives against Syrian government forces.
