I know Com and Jay-Z were cool or industry friends or whatever you call it, but this diss was super random to me. I can't recall if Nas and Common have any negative history. The song was Chi City on the Be album. I can't post the song since I'm at work. But I believe it's in the first verse. He says:
The game need a makeover
My man retired I'mma Takeover
Tell these Halftime n***as breaks over
These bars really don't need breaking down, but I'll do it for everyone that might not have caught it.
Be was released the year after the Black Album I believe. Even though Jay didn't retire for long, him announcing his retirement was big in hip hop. So when Common says "my man retired" he''s talking about Jay. Then he says, "I'mma Takeover" which was a reference to Jay's diss to Nas. Then he goes to say, "Tell these Halftime n***as breaks over" Halftime was a song on Illmatic.
These lines by themselves wouldn't raise an eyebrow, but togehter, it was a clear jab at Nas. Knowing Com, it wasn't anything serious, just some hip hop stuff. But I wonder why he would throw that jab at Nas.
