Report: Commuter rail shutdown could be coming

Commuter rails in New York and New Jersey, including the Metro North, could see a shutdown at the end of the year if Congress doesn't extend the deadline to install new train technology, Politico New York reports.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey sent a letter last week to the Senate's commerce committee warning of that possibility.

The shutdown would come as a result of the authorities not installing the Positive Train Control system by the Congress-mandated deadline of Dec. 31. The safety systems are designed to prevent runaway trains.

By failing to meet the deadline, the agencies would be subject to fines and employees could be found liable. The MTA and Port Authority would shut down the trains to avoid these effects.

Tomorrow ill find the commuter index and u wouldnt believe the amount of people in the metro ny/nj area that are classified under the GET ANOTHER JOB OR SUFFER AN HOUR AND HALF COMMUTE OR NINETY MILE DRIVE...

Its like 2 times the national average and the amazing this is that these people, me included, are only traveling like 20 miles
