Makes sense. In an ever-darkening world, Putin is seen as the last blonde-haired blue-eyed Aryan strongman on the world stage.
The change in Republican voters' views of Putin since Trump's rise is remarkable
With Donald Trump’s unusual friendliness toward Vladimir Putin in the news yet again, Will Jordan of YouGov presents a remarkable statistic:

PUTIN Net-Favorability (YouGov/Economist Poll) among...
Democrats
July 2014: -54
Aug 2016: -54
Republicans
July 2014: -66
Aug 2016: -27
Yes, according to YouGov’s polling, Putin’s favorability rating among Republican voters in the US — while still quite negative — has sharply improved since 2014.
Digging into the crosstabs a bit — you can check out the 2014 ones here, and the 2016 ones here — the change appears to have occurred almost entirely among voters who say they supported Donald Trump in the primaries. Trump primary voters give Putin a net favorability of -23, while GOP primary voters who say they supported another candidate give Putin a much worse net favorability rating of -61.
Broken out a bit more:
To be clear, Putin is still viewed unfavorably by a majority of Trump supporters and of Republicans generally. Still, that’s a massive improvement in his ratings since 2014.
- The number of Republicans who viewed Putin "very unfavorably" shrank from 51 percent in 2014 to just 22 percent in 2016.
- The number who view Putin favorably rose from 10 percent to 24 percent.
- And the number who say they don’t know what to think about him rose from 15 percent to 26 percent.
And it makes sense, because GOP voters are no longer hearing uniformly negative messaging from their party elites about Putin. It seems that Trump’s praise of Putin as a"strong leader" is having an impact.
Another tidbit: Republican voters view Hillary Clinton (-86) and Barack Obama (-74) far more unfavorably than Putin (-27), and Democratic voters also view Trump (-75) more unfavorably than the Russian president (-54).
