Rev. Al Sharpton moves MSNBC show to Sunday mornings

The Rev. Al Sharpton’s MSNBC show is moving from prime time to church time.

As part of an ongoing shakeup at the cable news channel, Sharpton’s “Politics Nation” will shift from 6 p.m. weeknights to 8 a.m. Sundays.

His last weeknight show will be Sept. 4 and his first Sunday show Oct. 4.

Sharpton deflected a suggestion that he had been demoted.

“I’m very happy,” he said Wednesday. “First, I can reach a wider audience of people who don’t get home by 6 at night. Second, I can now get the A-list guests and newsmakers I want. And third, a Sunday morning host is what I always wanted to be.

“I never wanted to be a weeknight pundit. I wanted to be a Sunday morning newsmaker. I wanted to be Dr. Martin Luther King, not Larry King.”

Sharpton said he will pretape some of the Sunday shows and do others live. He will also continue to preach in church on Sunday mornings, he said.

He also touted the 8 a.m. start time, which is earlier than Sunday morning shows like “Meet the Press.”

“The other hosts will be forced to talk about the news I’m making,” he said. “I will be setting the agenda.”

Sunday morning TV audiences aren’t necessarily larger than weeknight audiences, but Sharpton said a critical difference is that they include the people who make decisions.

“Everybody that deals with policy watches the Sunday morning shows,” he said. “I believe I can help set the policy tone.”

The Sunday move means Sharpton will be on the air for only one hour a week rather than five, but the “grind” of a daily show prevented him from traveling around the country as the presidential election campaign rolls along.

The Sharpton shift continues the retooling that MSNBC has done with its daytime lineup in the wake of stagnant ratings.

The network has basically eliminated opinion shows after its “Morning Joe” telecast on weekdays.

Chuck Todd will host a politics show at 5 p.m. and a network spokesman said a new show will be announced to take Sharpton’s slot in the coming weeks.

The evening lineup of Chris Matthews at 7, Chris Hayes at 8, Rachel Maddow at 9 and Lawrence O’Donnell at 10 remains unchanged.

Sharpton said that despite his relief at not doing a daily show any more, he’s proud of what he accomplished.

“People said I wouldn’t last four weeks and I lasted four years,” he said. “And I never missed a show.”

I am shocked that MSNBC actually made this move but it was a long time coming. Sharpton's show was awful.
Still don't know why they are keeping their primetime line-up unchanged though.
Matthews can stay because he is still doing the same shyt he has been doing since the dawn of time and it works but Chris Hayes is a non-entity, Lawrence O'Donnell is one of the worst TV hosts to ever grace a TV screen and Rachel Maddow is unwatchable as a solo host.

Matthews is the only watchable show on the network. Even Meet the Press is a complete joke now.

MSNBC is trash. Sharpton is terrible. Hayes is boring. Maddow is condescending and rather consistently mistaken. Matthews is somewhat entertaining but a dikk. O'Donnell is pointless.

MSNBC probably hurts the leftist cause in America as much as Fox just based on how they portray the face of "left"-wing politics as well to do, white coastals. Hell they fired the only guy who even talked about labor on their network.

Liberalism is such a thin veneer.

I wonder if they plan on replacing Al with another black host? It would look kind of :mjpls: for the supposedly Progressive Network to not have any people of color hosting any of their evening programming.

Who do they have to host? Toure? Bring what's her name back?:trash:

Michael Eric Dyson is on there every now and then, maybe he wouldn't be bad,

Toure is like an animated throw pillow so he would be terrible and I personally can't take more than 2 minutes of Dyson...his schtick is very annoying.
There are some black folks doing radio who have the ability to be entertaining and informative without being a slave to the ideology of any one political party.
I would be interested in seeing someone like Karen Hunter get a shot.
