I’ve been thinking about how certain songs can shape an artist’s legacy, and I came up with a hypothetical scenario involving Tupac Shakur. What if, instead of “Hail Mary” being released in 1996 and “Ballad of a Dead Soldier” in 2001, the two songs were swapped? How do you think this alteration would have impacted Tupac’s legacy and the way we remember him today?

Personally, I imagine “Ballad of a Dead Soldier” as Tupac’s final release before his passing, serving as a poignant farewell to his fans. On the other hand, “Hail Mary” could have gained significance as a posthumous release, perhaps seen as a powerful message from beyond the grave.

What are your thoughts on this alternate timeline? How do you think it would have changed the narrative surrounding Tupac’s music and influence?

Looking forward to hearing your perspectives brehs

Hail Mary would be more fast paced...

That would be a war anthem for the streets

The bloods would be playing this while smoking on Orlando Anderson.

I could see African boys loading up AKs to this in Sierra Leone.

It's diabolical if u think about it.

U could put together a compilation of Pac's hardest songs and make a 2 hr CD.

On his legacy, I don't think it would have had an overall impact. He was a legend when he died, and the Makaveli album hadn't even dropped yet.

Hail Mary would've been remixed by Amaru records and wouldn't sound the same

Not necessarily. Here's the original of "Ballad of a Dead Soulja"

Hutch didn't change it much, and IMO the polished version from UTEOT > the OG. Knowing what we know now about which songs were remixed, I don't think "Hail Mary" would have been remixed if they put it out in 2002 given the song was an original production that didn't sample anything, didn't have any disses, and didn't have Death Row referenced.

i'll say this about Hail Mary; that song carries the fukk out of Makaveli. sets the whole tone of the album

take that song off the album, and all that "best Pac album" talk is out the window :dead:a lot of those beats are weak as hell
A large part of the albums magic would be carried over on a maxi single that featured this song

fair point :manny:
