The purpose of rich text editor or this thread? 
An online rich-text editor is the interface forediting rich text within web browsers, which presents the user with a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" (WYSIWYG) editing area. The aim is to reduce the effort for users trying to express their formatting directly as valid HTML markup.
Basically it's an editor for the smiley codes and any other codes that may be used. Maybe someone else has more uses for it. I haven't used it myself in a while. Ever since the recent upgrades. I do think it depends on your browser. I know I was using that feature more on Firefox than when I now switched to mainly chrome.
