Damn RIP. Bernie is the "Blueprint" to this "funk" shyt.

Do you guys know how much dope ass music wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Bernie Worrel?
Pfunk would still be a doowop sounding group
Chronic/Nwa/eazy e would be out
Digital underground wouldn't be a group
E40's mob sound wouldn't exist
Epmd /sermonwouldn't have been able to become legends
The list goes on

Most g funk producers wouldn't be playing moogs if it wasn't for Bernie, the countless sessions he has, his solo discography is mind boggling diverse. His live work, we didn't even touch on. So many shows with so many different musicians. At one time Mos def had him in Black Jack Johnson.

This is the same guy who could play with traditional classical musicians & the next day spaced out funk & the day after that some reggae dub ish with sly & Robbie.

They should put him on the cover of every progressive music magazine, force the people to understand how influential he was.

Even Bernie could flip his own samples better & make a new song out of it, here he is creating aqua boogie sample into something fresh off blacktronic science lp, he was the mad scientist of the keyboard world. Every label would kill to have him for building a catalog. He was a risk taker, he could play the shyt backwards to prove he wasn't just grooving off into space. This song takes the rhythm guitar from aqua boogie & Bernie builds it up from there.

It isn't just his virtuoso skills, he could play with punk rock musicians ( & he did) he could play (I'm not exaggerating)
Bach
Sun ra
Augustus Pablo
Monk
Nat King Cole

Keith Richards praised Bernie. He has him on his solo debut, David Byrne of talking heads basically had him as an unofficial member of talking heads on tour.

He studied it all and he was a prodigy at 5 years old. Lightining struck hard that day when Bernie was born in plainfield.

He didn't care if you didn't get it, because even if you didn't get it, you got it. Get it?

Get familiar with a legendary musical force:

Free Your Mind... - YouTube

(This was Pre analog synthesizers & Bernie just had Hammond Organ & Piano for sessions, still killing it though)

You will notice the Temptations influence, George Clinton was writing for motown back in the day & that was the group that made them confident they could make it in the music business. But even then you could tell they were special as fukk.

This is the first official album Bernie touched off with, the first Funkadelic album was primarily not him. But then George realized he was integral for Funkadelic's success.

The other thing you notice is, how crazy it is fukking mixed, that's George on Acid mixing the record. Which gave it this sound that made it stood out. You will notice the heavy sound of Marshall Amps & Hendrixian spirit on this record. Mix that with the sounds of MC5, Stooges,Cream,Deep Purple,Led Zep, George combined that sound with the black influences of Temptations,Jimi Hendrix, meters

And this is what was birthed "Free your mind" make no mistake about it, white radio was scared to play this, a lot of the majors who had these classic rock acts were monpoloizing the airwaves. But also be aware, George knew that to get his brand off the ground, he was one of the first black artist besides Hendrix to get Marshall amplifiers. If you weren't Motown, you had to get people to remember you quick. By being the loudest & freakiest black act they were able to become a touring name fast.

One more thing, one Song off Free is recorded backwards, here's Bernies Gospel piano skills along with Hazel on lead vocals & guitar how it originally sounded

Eddie wasn't even the lead vocalist & he could still out soul the current crop of vocalists out there. He shouldn't be forgotten for his vocals, people always are surprised to find out that Eddie could've been lead vocalist & still played lead guitar if he wanted. Rip to him too
