New changes are underway at Roc Nation to empower independent artists.

According to a news release, Jay-Z’s label has merged its Roc Nation Label and Equity Distribution (EQ) divisions to form ROC Nation distribution, with plans for it to bolster artists by giving them greater freedoms across technology and the music business

The formation of ROC Nation distribution is a natural transition in the music space,” the press release states. “The mission is to support and empower independent artists while providing them the tools and services to distribute their music. All artists signed to Roc Nation Label will join and benefit from the new ROC Nation distribution structure.”

Variety reports the distribution segment was established in 2019 and is being led by President Krystian Santini. The segment allowed artists to maintain ownership of their masters, and it will continue with an artist services division that includes marketing, publishing administration, and data analytics available through a proprietary dashboard.

The music industry is undergoing a significant transformation,” the press release mentions. “The rise of direct music distribution channels, combined with the influence of social media, has reshaped the traditional landscape. These developments have created a direct connection between artists and consumers, empowering artists to take greater control of promotion, marketing, creative direction, and business development.”

The announcement of Roc Nation’s merger is also accompanied by the departure of Shari Bryant. She served as co-president of Roc Nation for the past five years, Vibe reports.

“Its been such a beautiful journey,” Bryant reflected in a post shared on Instagram. “From where it started (sitting in my cubicle @ RocAFella Records), to now ending my 5 year tenure as Co-President of RocNation Label. It’s bitter sweet, but as I often say, you have to Do It Scared. Onward and upward, and as always…More To Come

Dude saying majors already take 15% off top is just mad. That's 15% minimum. You also don't own your masters with them in vast majority of deals. Add that to 360 foolishness and it gets even worse.

the thing I'm :patrice: on is you are relying on them as far as believing their numbers regarding sales and streams.

Unless there's ever a truly independent entity able to verify the numbers, all the claims made by these labels are inherently suspect. There's just too much incentive for them to make up whatever.

No matter what the wannabe influencers say on these online platforms, public confidence has evaporated accordingly.

Russ and Chance the Rapper were very lucky. Both their teams had direct connections with majors. There situations aren’t normal at all and probably won’t happen

I wonder how artist missed there chance of signing and becoming popular listening to them with the only be independent speeches without having the same connects they had

When WSG signed to Roc Nation back in like '19, Jay said the "ultimate goal" was to do exactly what this move is proposing.

The industry has lost a lot of money in the past 20 years and it's tried to make up for those losses with a lot of that bread on the back of artists' publishing and masters (360's). To the point where people are scared to sign deals now. This move would help indie artists to stay on their own path without selling their souls for quick advances and more visibility.

Serious game changer for anyone that actually understands the business and for artists not willing to be robbed for a look.

How do you account for the fact that music industry revenue continues to hit new highs year after year quarter after quarter and growth remains strong?
There's a cartel between the music labels, live nation and spotify.
The middle class and lower musician has effectively ceased to exist.
They're trying their best to capture as much of what is left of the market as possible.
We need to keep that in mind.
