The Montreal Canadiens named four alternate captains on Monday instead of going the traditional route and selecting one captain and two or three alternates. Defensemen P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov and forwards Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec all will wear an “A” on their sweaters for the 2014-15 NHL season.

Unfortunately, in the NHL level, the C and A patch and label are just fluff. The head coach is the real captain. The captain of the team really just organizes the team annual Christmas dinner.
