It would help to explain "instinct" if this were true, how a bird knows how to fly, a beaver just knows how to build a dam etc.

I don't know enough about this, but I read somewhere that that children of parents who have suffered a drought or other situations in which food was scarce tend to develop similar eating habits and the same kind of body as their parents, even if they never experience those extreme situations themselves and were born AFTER those situations...this might be some kind of "physical" memory.
