Several people have been taken to hospital after a street in a Glasgow suburb descended into a "war zone".

Witnesses reported a towering fire, and one boy was seen "covered in blood" on Frankfield Road, in the Cardowan area on Sunday afternoon. Two vans were burnt out and local residents posted photographs of the fire and clouds of smoke.

Large numbers of police were at the scene on Sunday afternoon. Three men were attacked in the incident, police said.

Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed "several patients" had been transported to hospital.

A police spokesman said he thought the disorder, which started around 1.30pm, was "more likely to be rival gangs fighting" than anything related to terrorism.

It is understood the incident was the result of an altercation between groups of males.

One passer-by posted a picture on social media of a road gridlocked by emergency vehicles, adding that it was "like a war zone".

He said: "Just dropping the kids off in cardowan and frankfield rd has been closed , it's like a war zone".

An eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, said he saw two vans on fire with flames "as high as a house".

He said: "I was washing my car and I saw high flames and smoke, then the fire brigade came."

He added that the area was "very nice" and that nothing like this had happened before.

Local resident Frank Kerr, 59, a banksman slinger, also saw the aftermath and said: "I saw a boy sitting in a paramedic's van. He was covered in blood, but I didn't see what happened to him.

"It's very rare for this neck of the woods.

"There was a fire at the end of the street, and I heard tyres blowing up. There were police, fire brigade, ambulances, tow trucks, you name it, everything was here."

Police cordoned off the area on Sunday afternoon. Pictures of the scene showed the wreckage of two burnt grey vans.

Police said inquiries were still at an early stage and they could not comment on the nature or the cause of the victims' injuries. The three men are said to be in a stable condition.

A police helicopter attended the scene and a significant presence from the force remained in the area on Sunday night.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We got called out to a van on fire. The incident has been handed over to the police."

Detective Superintendent Stephen Grant from Police Scotland said: “This was a brazen incident on Frankfield Road, involving a number of vehicles being set alight.

"A substantial police response followed the initial reports. This has given rise to speculation that the incident may have been connected to terrorism in some form.

"Whilst we are limited in what we can say in respect of the ongoing enquiry, what we can confirm at this time, is that this incident is not related to terrorism."

Glasgow violence: people taken to hospital after reports of stabbings and two vans ablaze

This the type of shyt you expect to see in govan, springburn, possil and other inner city areas of glasgow. Cardowan usually doesn't get incidents like this. It's all been kicking off recently anyway.

got a description of the suspects.

The first suspect is described as white, 6ft and wearing a black hooded top with the hood up.

The second man is described as white, 6ft, blond hair and wearing dark-coloured trousers and a dark hooded top.

The third suspect is described as white, 5ft 4in, slim, wearing all dark clothing including a hooded top and dark-coloured baseball cap.

My uncle has half a Glasgow smile. Got it in the 90s on the 50 pitches. (Was nicknamed 50 stitches for a reason). It was over an argument about a football game. :snoop:
