No, I've bought 5 used cars from a dealer and the only one I knew I probably got ripped on was my VW CC. Otherwise I've been able to resell them at good prices.

I've sold cars before so I know they are going to get their cut. That doesn't mean you can't buy it right. As far as the car goes, when buying used it really doesn't matter who you buy from, its always a crapshoot.

I mean if you can find the car you want private sale you more that likely will get that car cheaper than you would at a dealership. Sometimes damn near $5k cheaper. But most people dont sell their car themselves, they rather avoid the tire kickers and just trade it. So you have way more inventory at a dealership. Just be prepared to pay like $2k more in dealer fees and higher taxes (you can finesse the amount you paid on the title so that you pay less taxes if you go private, a dealership aint doing that) And really the extra $1-2k dealership fee aint all that bad when spread out 60 months :yeshrug:

What about if you're paying cash for a vehicle at a dealership?

It's about convenience
At least at a dealership they have a reputation to uphold. If you buy from private seller you got all kinds of risks in terms of the car being fukked up or the transaction itself being shady.
Go to a dealer with your own financing and take it somewhere else for a pre purchase inspection.
My strategy is looking at luxury dealers for lower tier trade ins. It seem like they just want them shyts off their lot asap.
I got a 4 yr old g37 for $15k at an Audi dealer that way when all the infiniti dealers wanted like $20-25k minimum
I've seen crazy deals like couple year old honda accords for $12k at Porsche dealers and shyt like that too

Nope, dealers will lie through their teeths to sell you something they overlooked during a trade-in or auction.

Best cost effective method to buying a used car from a outside individual, set a side a small portion to have the car checked by a mechanic or the car brand dealer. Work it into your asking price. Also what ever car you buy expect/assume in your budget 10-20% will be needed in repairs for the next 12 months. People trade in cars because problems begin to occur unless they are leases.

I have purchased 3 cars in my life and all 3 were from a dealership...but it was never from the car manufacturers dealership, for example
my first car was a nissan altima but I brought the car from a toyota dealership. They got the car from an auction, since its not their brand they wanted to get it off the lot quick so I negotiated a price I was good with and the rest is history. I brought 2 of the 3 cars I had this way

This is untrue, dealerships have reputations to uphold and they will at least put some type of service into the car. Buying privately is a double edged sword. If you have the cash, yes you can save a lot of money compared to the dealership but A. You have no warranty in most cases. B. You don't know how the previous owner treated the car and while you can check some things with your eyes, unless you are willing to pay a mechanic to inspect the car, you don't really know what's wrong with it. My nephew purchased a car private sale and ended dumping 2500 of work into the car.
