Sean “Diddy” Combs launching a new charter school in Harlem

He’s been a rapper, actor, singer, entrepreneur, record producer and clothing designer. Now Sean “Diddy” Combs has taken on a new job as the founder of a charter school in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood.

Combs announced Monday that the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School will open in the fall. The school will be overseen by Capital Prep leader Steve Perry, who founded Capital Prep Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut, in 2005.

Combs and the board have hired Orlando, Florida-based educator Danita Jones as the principal of Capital Prep Harlem.

Combs says creating the school is “a dream come true.”

Combs was born in Harlem and grew up in Mount Vernon, New York. He attended Howard University, where he dropped out after two years but earned an honorary degree in 2014.

The school should fill up with students. Parents won't see a problem with a violent college dropout with multiple baby mamas having a school.

Diddy is just a figure head but he can make a little money on the board of directors or whatever position they give him, plus there may be more opportunities in the future. Andre Agassi (high school dropout) has a low-performing charter school which led to him starting an education-based investment fund.

Steve Perry is nothing but a snake. He always said how great his Hartford charter was despite it being just as bad as the neighborhood traditional publics. When the Hartford school board wouldn't let him take over another school, he flexed on Twitter: "The only way to lose a fight is to stop fighting. All this did was piss me off. It's so on. Strap up, there will be head
injuries."

Capital Prep's Steve Perry To Step Down Next Year

Perry, a public speaker and author who has openly derided teachers' unions and others, did not hold back on Monday.

"New York is very different from Connecticut," he said. "In New York we receive enough money to run a school. Charter schools are welcomed. The lies that are told about charter schools have already been debunked."

Is there any black people still in harlem due to gentrification , that could benefit this school?

Iyanla Vanzant (Oprah network) is part of the school. She is calling herself Dr. While she does have a JD from CUNY law it is unusual for someone with a law degree to be called Dr.

There is a also a Reverend Georgiette Morgan-Thomas, never heard of her before.

I'd rather lose tax dollars than bring profit motive into childrens education.

No one who hates charter schools will be able to tell you exactly why they hate charter schools.

They just know they do because the millions of dollars teachers unions pour into propoganda, marketing and lobbyists tell them it's the cool thing to do.

When the fact is that minorities in public schools get lost in the system and don't get the individualized and structured attention that they might need.

Steve Perry already has successful charters under his belt (not without controversy of course). Minorities are succeeding in his schools. You can't argue against that.

Anyone here spewing that anti charter shyt is just going to google "why charter schools suck" before they answer you anyway. And their going to bring back all the regulation, certification, standardization bullshyt that the teachers union push in order to keep 109 year old do nothing teachers in seats in classrooms.

Everyone here can think back to the one or two (or 3 or 4) teachers in high school that never made you do anything. Easy A. Pass in your homework and you knew they weren't going to check it.

shyt like that doesn't happen in charter schools. Because administrators can actually make sure teachers are doing their jobs without having to worry about grievances and contracts.

I will say charters helped but not majority at fault at what's been done to the teaching profession. There's been a shortage of teachers for sometime and republicans fought hard to have tenure taken away and make teaching more performance-based. Tenure and stability was the main thing that attracted teachers to retain it as a career. So with less teachers to go around as is, charters are now fighting for the same teachers. Charters have a little wiggle room to offer a little more for teachers while cutting costs elsewhere. Traditional public schools work on a strict budget. In turn, teachers are having very high turnovers and the economy in certain cities have improved for college grads so less go into teaching. Proof: Decline in applicants for Teach for America that kept a steady stream teachers for public and charters. The careers of teachers are getting shorter. Increase in young teachers fukking students. Those are some of the reasons why teaching unions are beefing.

Ironically, teaching seems to be the only profession that's not able to capitalize on its shortage. A reason may be because it's not hard to become a teacher and if pay increase it will be a surplus and teaching salaries are generally a fixed cost. Maybe the unions should have all their teachers say fukk the kids and not work. That's a bold move that will see immediate results.
