The collected data relevant to the stated claim about Section 8 housing and government shutdown impacts is summarized below:

Government Shutdown and HUD/Section 8 Impact

  • HUD last updated its government shutdown contingency plan in 2023. During a lapse in government funding, many federal employees halt work due to no available funds. HUD programs that depend on prior committed funds may continue only as long as those funds last. These monthly subsidy programs include housing choice vouchers (Section 8), public housing operating subsidies, and multifamily assistance contracts. Once funds are exhausted, these programs would cease to operate until funding resumes.leadingage+1
  • Historically, housing assistance agencies have never been fully cut off from funds in the five decades of the Section 8 voucher program, including during previous government shutdowns. However, funding freezes or delays create uncertainty and concern among recipients and public housing authorities, with agencies often facing cash flow challenges when access to HUD-controlled funds is locked until appropriations are restored.shelterforce+1
  • A brief government shutdown might not immediately affect Section 8 recipients, but effects could become noticeable after several weeks if funding remains unavailable. The ability of public housing authorities to cover rent payments to landlords depends on their reserves and access to HUD funds, which are mostly controlled centrally and not locally held.ruralhome

Specific Claim Elements: 2-Year Duration and 90-Day Notice

  • No evidence was found of a HUD or federal rule stating Section 8 recipients on assistance for 2 years would automatically receive a 90-day notice if the government shuts down post-October 1st.
  • No official documentation or policies from HUD mention a mandatory 90-day notice tied to length of Section 8 assistance or a government shutdown.
  • Notices to tenants in Section 8 programs typically follow lease agreements or funding program rules, which do not appear to include such an automatic 90-day termination or eviction notice related to government shutdowns.shelterforce+2

Current Legislative and Budget Context

  • Congress faces budget deadlines requiring temporary continuing resolutions (CRs) to avoid a shutdown. These CRs maintain flat funding levels but may not include funding increases needed to keep pace with inflation or increased rental assistance costs, potentially causing shortfalls in voucher programs in the future.nlihc+1
  • Policy uncertainty and federal budget constraints create anxiety among housing recipients and agencies, but as of now, no specific new rules mandate emergency notices or changes to voucher terms strictly due to shutdowns.governing+1

Full Summary Report for the Claim:

  1. Government shutdowns can delay or temporarily halt HUD operations, including Section 8 voucher payments, but monthly subsidy payments continue only as long as prior obligated funds remain.
  2. Public housing authorities rely on HUD funds that are centrally controlled and may face liquidity issues if funds are locked during shutdowns, but historically, tenants have not been automatically evicted or given immediate termination notices solely due to shutdowns.
  3. No policy or rule was found that requires sending a 90-day notice to Section 8 recipients after two years of assistance if a government shutdown occurs after October 1st. Such a rule appears to be inaccurate or a misunderstanding.
  4. Recipients and housing authorities face uncertainty and stress surrounding shutdowns and budget negotiations, but the specific outcome described (automatic 90-day notices post-2 years Section 8 under shutdown) is not supported by official HUD policy or recent contingency plans.

This suggests the claim by the boss is likely incorrect or based on misunderstanding of government shutdown impacts on Section 8 housing.

If needed, more targeted research in HUD regulations or direct contact with a local housing authority for confirmation could be done.

Serious question. How is she eligible for section 8 while holding a managerial job in your department? :dahell:

I was under the impression that even midlevel mgmt salaries disqualified someone from a means tested program like section 8.
She's not in section 8. She was speaking about what might happen to people who are on it Oct 1st.

If you saying it i believe you the way rent is people need the help

Seriously!

1. People are struggling to pay rent.
2. The job market is screwed and no one is hiring.
3. Everyone is underpaid while groceries and utilities are increasing.

Just imagine what people who actually live on section 8 have to deal with :snoop:it’s not rocket science.

I haven't did the research but my boss said this. She said that after Oct 1st if the government shuts and they're been on Section 8 for 2 years. They get a 90 day notice. If true this will be crazy.
Reminds me of my goofy coworkers panicking every damn year knowing there is a 99% chance a CR gets passed
