About 155 million people have employer-based health insurance.

The Senate Republicans’ bill to repeal and replace Obamacare could impose taxes on employer-based health insurance place, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. About 155 million Americans are covered through employer-based health insurance. Currently, tax law does not consider health insurance compensation as income for workers.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), and a number of senators are open to taxing employer-based plans, but senators haven’t made a final decision on whether to include such taxes in their draft bill.

Republicans are attempting to move the Senate bill forward under budget reconciliation rules, a parliamentary maneuver that would allow them to bypass any potential filibuster threat. But in order to qualify for budget reconciliation, the Senate’s version of the American Health Care Act would need to save at least $119 billion over the next decade — a goal that new taxes might facilitate.

But there may be significant pushback. According to the Journal, House efforts to tax employer-based health insurance plans were discouraged by Republicans worried about political fallout and business groups.

If Republicans decide to tax these plans, they may further lower the chances of passing Trumpcare, since Republicans can’t afford to lose more than two Senate votes and disagree on a range of other health care issues, such as whether to keep Obamacare taxes or how much to cut Medicaid.

Trumpcare is already incredibly unpopular without a tax employer-based plans. A Kaiser Family Foundation poll released on Wednesday found that nearly half of the respondents said they thought the bill would make health care costs worse for themselves and their family. Only 8 percent of respondents said the Senate should pass Trumpcare as is.

As awful as the GOP health care "plan" is.....I have long favored removing health insurance from an employer....it's the stupidest fukkin thing in the world

Since when did your employer became the de facto health provider? Most employers only do it to attract talent. They don't pick your cable, internet, cell, mortgage or car....why the fukk do you have to be on employer based insurance? It's annoying.
