What do you do when you're tired of not seeing Black representation in the content you enjoy? You create it!

That's exactly what Basi Affia did. As a writer and comics fan, Basi Affia launched his own comics production company, Sensi'il Studios, in Des Moines, Iowa—a town with fewer than 30,000 Black people. As far as Basi Affia knows, his studio is the first of its kind in his hometown.

Sensi'il Studios publishes books and webtoons that are rooted in Pan-African science fiction and fantasy. Basi Affia uses Black, Latino, and Asian voice actors to voice his characters. He's working on producing more content in 2023.

Let's support Basi Affia in building up his studio to create positive Black representation in the comics world!

Owner and chief writer of Sensiil Studios

Author, Father, Soldier

Starting off young, Aniekanabasi, born as Aniekan, began writing in first grade. As he gained awareness of the travesties in the world around him, his writing began to speak to the issues he felt called to stand against. As a lover of science fiction and fantasy, he strived to speak on real life issues through the medium of storytelling while also giving his fellow humans a world to escape into.

Marrying at 21 years old, he changed his name to its full Ibibio expression, Aniekanabasi, meaning "There's nothing greater than the power of God." Soon after, he and his wife had their first child, Azriel, after whom the main character of his comic series is named.

Understanding the responsibilities of being a husband and father, he joined the Army National Guard as a Religious Affairs Specialist with the hopes of being able to help soldiers cope with life trauma both from military experiences as well as issues every human being faces.

With his sights set on helping everyone he can, and reaching isolated souls through his writing, he gave himself the nom de plume "Basi Affia." (Affia means "White" in Ibibio.)

Company Values

The Nguzo Saba

Sensiil Studios is founded on the Nguzo Saba, the seven pillars of Kwanzaa. These seven principles are support beams that uplift not only our company but the black community as a whole. The Nguzo Saba consist of the following:
  1. Umoja (Unity): maintaining unity as a family, community, and culture across the Pan African diaspora.
  2. Kujichagulia (Self-Determination): defining, naming, creating, and speaking for ourselves.
  3. Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility): building and maintaining our community—solving problems together.
  4. Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics: building and maintaining retail stores and other businesses and to profit from these ventures.
  5. Nia (Purpose): work collectively to build communities that will restore the greatness of people of African descent.
  6. Kuumba (Creativity): to find new, innovative ways to leave communities of Pan African descent in more beautiful and beneficial ways than the community inherited.
  7. Imani (Faith): the belief in God, family, heritage, leaders, and others that will leave to the victory of Pan Africa around the world.

The Platinum Rule

The most popular rule on Earth that crosses cultural, racial, national and religious borders is the Golden Rule, to love your neighbor as you love yourself. This inherently implies that there is a love for the self. One of the side effects of racism is a developed self hate. From skin tone and hair texture to cultural staples, people of African descent have to relearn how to love ourselves in a healthy manner in order to be able to love others in a healthy manner. This is what we call the Platinum Rule, love yourself!
