The public safety director in St. Louis on Monday issued a warning about a dangerous batch of what is suspected to be fentanyl after a seventh person in the same area of the city died of an apparent overdose.
First responders were called to the 4400 block of Forest Park Avenue around 1:20 a.m. Monday. A man was later pronounced dead of a suspected overdose, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
CDC data showed that overdose deaths topped 100,000 for the 12 months ending in April, including 2,004 deaths in Missouri. The National Center for Drug Abuse Statistics said fentanyl is a factor in more than half of all overdose deaths.
Fentanyl is 50 times more powerful than heroin and can be lethal even in small amounts. It’s used legally during surgeries and to treat people with chronic, severe pain, such as cancer patients. Illicit fentanyl is often laced with other dangerous drugs like heroin.
