It depends.

For one, "relationships" as most people know them to be, are more centered around surface level interaction. It's people that have been with each other for decades physically and still really don't know each other sexually. On the flip side you might 'hook up' with someone you could be extremely in tune with. Vulnerability and thus empowerment play a huge role in how deep you are able to go into the sexual experience.

Whether in a 'relationship' or just hooking up, the most important thing is connection. Without it then you really are using someone's body to masturbate. Once you've experienced the difference, it's extremely hard to go back to surface level sexual interactions. Because without connection and passion it can be really lifeless and be BEYOND overrated as an act in and of itself.
