Shared Continuity Coming to DC's Animated Movies
Justice League: War to launch the new shared superhero universe.

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Entertainment's latest animated film Justice League: War debuts tomorrow, but its release will also mark the beginning of a new shared continuity for the companies' series of direct-to-video superhero movies -- similar to Marvel Studio's Cinematic Universe.

"This will definitely be the first salvo in doing new movies that are in continuity with each other," JL:W producer James Tucker told CBR in a recent interview. "Our next movie's going to be Son of Batman, and that Batman will be the same Batman that you see in Justice League: War. Basically, we'll have two concurrent series of Justice League movies and Batman movies, and they'll be in continuity with each other. So it's kind of worldbuilding."



Of course, that doesn't mean WBA will be limiting itself to just New 52 stories for the in-continuity releases, according to JL:W director Jay Oliva. "We can do original content, we can do New 52 stuff," he said. "I still want to do Gotham by Gaslight. Red Son would be a great one to do as a one-off."

Tucker explained that the current plan is to produce three animated movies a year, two in the continuity of Justice League: War and one standalone. In 2014, the third movie will be Batman: Assault on Arkham (also directed by Oliva), which takes place in the world of the Batman: Arkham video games. However, Tucker added that, as always, such plans are "subject to change."



Justice League: War comes home to Blu-ray Combo Pack ($24.98 SRP), DVD ($19.98 SRP) and Digital HD on February 4. (The Combo Pack will also include Digital HD with UltraViolet.)

I'm a HUGE fan of the DCAU/Timmverse and love what Marvel Studio is doing with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so i'm all for this.
