Wonder who else will follow....... Sharp was known for their Aquos line of sets. I know Samsung is a major player, plus having to compete with Sony, Panasonic, and Vizio...... Shame to see these companies selling off divisions that they were known for........

The Japanese TV manufacturer will stop making and selling TVs in North America. It will license its brand and logo to China's Hisense.

Reuters reports that one of Japan's TV titans, Sharp, is calling it quits in North America. According to the article, the financially troubled electronics giant will sell its Mexico-based TV-assembly facility to Hisense—the Chinese TV maker—for just under $24 million. Furthermore, Sharp will license its brand name to Hisense for use in North America..

"The Japanese electronics maker said it would sell its TV manufacturing plant in Mexico and license its brand in the Americas to China's Hisense Group. In a separate statement, Hisense said it would pay $23.7 million for the business. Osaka-based Sharp was once a highly profitable manufacturer of premium TVs and a favoured screen supplier to Apple Inc, but has struggled to innovate enough to fend off Asian rivals."- read more at Reuters.com

Sharp has already released its 2015 lineup of TVs, which it debuted at CES. There's currently no information on what happens next when it comes to current Sharp TVowners. However, it's worth noting that last year, Sharp similarly withdrew from the European TV market—this isn't uncharted territory for the financially troubled company.

* To sell Mexico TV plant, license brand to China's Hisense

* May consider strategic deal for LCD business -CEO (Adds Hisense comment on purchase price, Sharp comments on further restructuring)

TOKYO, July 31 (Reuters) - Sharp Corp on Friday said it would exit the TV set business in the Americas and consider more steps to shore up its finances, after reporting a deeper-than-expected quarterly loss on weak sales of smartphone displays.

The Japanese electronics maker said it would sell its TV manufacturing plant in Mexicoand license its brand in the Americas to China's Hisense Group. In a separate statement, Hisense said it would pay $23.7 million for the business.

Osaka-based Sharp was once a highly profitable manufacturer of premium TVs and a favoured screen supplier to Apple Inc , but has struggled to innovate enough to fend off Asian rivals.

In May, the company sought $1.9 billion in its second major bank-led financing in three years. In return, it promised to cut 5,000 jobs, or 10 percent of staff.

"Sharp has not been able to fully adapt to the intensifying market competition, which led to significantly lower profits compared to the initial projections for the previous fiscal year, and has been suffering from poor earnings performance," Sharp said in a statement explaining the TV business sale.

That's why I laugh when people do their brand loyalty bs. It's all about quality vs. price. Before, people would buy Sharp and look down on Hisense, but now Hisense is the same as Sharp. In the grand scheme of things they are all the same: manufacturing with cheap components and cheap labor in order to create an object, then selling that object for 10x the cost.

The TV market is in a weird space right now. With All-In-One Desktops getting lighter, bigger, and less expensive...what is even the point of getting a set that does just that?

It's something that I've had in mind for a while, my next "TV" purchase might just be a large all-in-one 4K or 5K PC.

Something tells me that is what apple is cooking in the background, some massive iMac that will be 42". That whole industry is running an outdated model, it's crazy to me to drop $1,000+ on just a nice TV in 2015 and moving forward.

Breh, you in the extreme minority if you thinking TV's getting replaced by PC. The price of a 42" iMac would be :whew:

Not everyone is a nerd

Nobody said it would have the highest of internals, just a nice display and speakers.

It's only "a PC" in the loosest terms, it will have a completely different UI.

Yeah man I agree, Pre-2000 everyone was stealing their left nut to get a big screen HDTV but now most people hardly watch cable TV, since more content is available online.
I watch most of my shows and movies on my 13" MBP, outside of gamers the size of the TV and its brand doesn't even matter anymore.:yeshrug:
