  • The Baltimore Ravens had planned to select Shedeur Sanders in the 5th round, with the 141st overall pick in the NFL Draft.
  • However, Sanders communicated to Baltimore that he didn’t want to be drafted by them. His reasoning: he didn’t want to be on a roster with Lamar Jackson and not have a chance to play anytime soon.
  • Sanders wanted to be drafted by a team where he might have a clearer path to playing.
  • Instead of drafting Sanders, the Ravens used the 141st pick on offensive lineman Carson Vinson.
  • Three picks later (so slightly after the Ravens’ decision), the Cleveland Browns selected Shedeur Sanders at No. 144.
  • In Cleveland, Sanders is listed as the third quarterback on the depth chart behind Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. There is opportunity ahead though, since other QBs (like Kenny Pickett and Tyler Huntley) have been moved or released.

Mistake or nah ?

I think it's understandable to want to be in a position where you see a path toward being the starter.

At the same time, some really great quarterbacks did spend years behind established starters (Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady...)

I don't think it's a mistake by Shedeur Sanders to say that to the Ravens.

I don't know if I'd say it was a "mistake" by Sanders to say that to the Ravens, but it's stupid to say that to a team looking to draft you after all of the pre-draft talk about him.

Would he have said no to being drafted to the Ravens if they said they were going to take him in the first or second round, or did he feel more comfortable saying that because he was already falling in the 5th round?

Edit: I understand a player not wanting to sit behind a QB that recently signed a big contract extension, is beloved by the fanbase, is elite, and is not going anywhere for a while. However, when you're not a clear bonafide elite prospect, I don't think that's typically the best way to go about it.

I think it would be one thing if Lamar was older like Rodgers age… then yea…. It’s fine to sit behind him….

But Lamar clearly has a long career ahead of him…. Probably plays for another 10.

Thats a long time to wait. Not to mention, this ain’t the era like say Young was in where whomever the 2nd string is can stay on a teams for like 5-10 years.

Most teams for one reason or another change their backups every year or ever other year

I'm not at him wanting to get a path towards playing time. Shameful how the article wants to put a rookie that's wants to play in a bad light.

Every rookie wants to earn ROTY
Meanwhile he got drafted by the Browns and the Coli is pissed because he went to a crap team.

Basically the ideal spot was a solid team that needed a QB sooner than later that woulda gave Shedeur first dibs.

That’s just the Steelers and Tomlin ain’t want him.

He should just shut up and bet his confidence on himself.

Boys be talking themselves out the p*ssy.

Hell Brady told him, it's not where you drafted at, its what you do after you'd drafted.

Deion should've coached him better during the draft interview practices.
