A shooting at airport in Fort Lauderdale airport has left a number of people dead, the Broward County Sheriff said Friday. One person has been taken into custody.

Barbara Sharief, the mayor of Broward County, told CNN that one person was in custody and that there was an “active crime scene investigation” at the airport.
“He was a lone shooter,” Mr. Sharief said, “and we have no evidence at this time that he was acting with anyone else.”
Reports of the shooting came about 1 p.m. with numerous reports on social media, including some by Ari Fleischer, the former White House press secretary for George W. Bush.
“Everyone is running,” Mr. Fleischer tweeted just before 1 p.m.

said he was told by the police that there was one gunman and “five victims.” There was no independent confirmation of that report.
Local media outlets reported that the number might be higher.
Later, Mr. Fleischer said “All seems calm now but the police aren’t letting anyone out of the airport — at least not the area where I am.”
News helicopters showed hundreds of people standing on the tarmac as an ambulance drove by and numerous law enforcement officers rushed to the airport.
Live images from WPLG television showed dozens of people milling around on a runway.
