i'm fine with this to some extent. no one should be getting rich off running a non profit either.

again you gotta show where the funds are going.

there should be no mega churches.

no one should be getting rich off religion. should be no joel osteens or creflos.

i do think religious orgs/churches do use a lot of their funds for good, or just to sustain their business, and we should tax none of that.

Majority of churches have under 30 members

Most pastors aren’t rich and don’t even get paid and have regular jobs

My church has around 30-40 members

Even in the small little space we are renting it’s almost 4,000 a month because churches are zoned for only certain areas

Man ain't nobody trying to hear this. This is a scarecrow argument. Most churches are just like your church and my home church. But people are basing their argument like every church is run by Creflo. I know a lot of preachers who preach while working a second full time job.

I'm ignorant on why this is a thing. Is this only in America? Is there legitimate reasoning for it? Tell it to me like I'm remedial
Yes because they make charitable contributions to their communities in both labor and currency. They're not tax exempt for religious purposes but they are tax exempt for their benefit to society as nonprofits.

The religious connotation is extra. Their tax exempt status should be maintained because in general those are the types of organizations a society should incentivize, the same way they're tax advantages to marriage, retirement accounts like 401ks or IRAs, or higher education which also benefit society

....
Yes

So should every other charity

Churches still help but I can’t expect atheists to understand that …

I would only tax mega-churches and it would be a small amount. I agree with other posters that most are small and make just enough to operate.

THEY ARE. MOST CHURCHES HAVE BUSINESS MEETING QUARTERLY.

ALSO, ITS PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE. CHURCHES HAVE TO MAKE THIS INFORMATION AVAILABLE FROM THE IRS WEBSITE. THEY ALSO HAVE TO PRESENT IT IN WRITING WITHIN 90 DAYS IF YOU REQUEST IT.

BUT NOBODY DOES THAT. ITS EASIER TO COMPLAIN.
Appreciate the info
