WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton has introduced a bill to make the District the 51st state

H.R. 51, the D.C. Statehood Bill, was introduced by Holmes Norton on Thursday, the day that the 116th Congress was gaveled into session.

“I have a commitment that there will be a hearing on H.R. 51 from our good Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Elijah Cummings that this bill will get a prompt hearing and then, of course, go to the floor,” Holmes Norton said in a video posted to her official Twitter page.

Today as my first act of the 116th Congress, I signed and introduced #HR51 to make DC the 51st state, the only way to grant more than 700,000 taxpaying American citizens living in our nation’s capital their full democratic rights. #DCStatehood

Holmes Norton has introduced the legislation several times without success, but The Hill reports that this would be the first hearing and markup for the bill since 1993. Holmes Norton also told The Hill she has 151 co-sponsors, a record high for the legislation.

Granting the District statehood would create two additional U.S. senators and likely an additional voting representative in the House. The GOP has opposed statehood for D.C. and its 700,000 taxpaying citizens in the past because it would likely benefit Democrats.

I say no.

I think a Federal City should be neutral on national votes. This is the one place in the U.S. where all Americans have a stake in. I think it's better if it is kept as the status quo.

If you happen to live in DC, as I did for a few years....to bad. This is nature of the situation.

However, I would make a just as riveting compromise, that all DC residents pay no federal income taxes.............Talk about Fuuckery :krs:

It would be like Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands where they receive tax money, but don't have Congressional vote or pay federal income taxes, but may pay a few other taxes like social security and medicare. Taxation in Puerto Rico - Wikipedia

Matterfact, I would rather see Puerto Rico be a state than D.C., because I think it's neutrality is so important.

The median age in Washington, DC is 33.8 years, with a slight gender gap of 52.5% female, and 47.5% male spread across the state.

D.C's racial diversity can be seen below, featuring 48.3% African Americans, 40.4% Caucasians, 4.5% other race, 3.6% Asian, 2.8% two or more races, and .3% Native Americans/Native Alaskans.

When those numbers flips, watch this idea suddenly grow legs and sprint.
