Ok so I just applied to go back to school for a degree in MIS..(my current bachelors is worthless dont even ask :francis:)..but I just heard back from a law firm that I did not expect to hear back from for a job listing they had on Craigslist. The position is Client Intake Specialist. Position is full time 12-8 in a town about 25 minutes from me..provides insurance and 401k program. No salary listed but other Client Intake Specialists make between 35k and 50k from what Ive seen. I currently work part time in a seasonal gig ending next week.

Assuming I get offered the job..should i take it or go back to school?

I would go back to school, not sure what that job would do for you long-term :yeshrug: I would only take it if you were pressed for money or if that's what you really want to do with your career.

Not pressed for money but am getting impatient with life

Thats not really what i want to do since theres no upward mobility and theres no independence

1. How are you paying for school?

2. Does the program offer online classes?

3. If the program doesn't offer online classes, is the campus nearby?

If you have the money/scholarship to pay for school, then you should go back to school and forget about that job. But make sure you have a plan, because you could end up getting a job with a better title and the same pay. As someone with a degree in MIS, I'll let you know that you are better off if you have some specialized skill to back up your MIS degree. Learn some coding language (Java, C, HTML), or learn SQL/Database Admin, and/or get some other technical certification.

On the other hand, If you have to take out student loans, then I'd suggest taking the job and going to school part-time, preferably online.

take the job and have them pay for your school...

He could try to negotiate that, but even if they offer that benefit, there's usually a 1 year grace period that the employee has to meet, or a work requirement after getting the degree that would require him to pay it back if he leaves before meeting the requirement.

1. Some out of pocket some thru loans. I currently have no debt.
2. Probably.
3. Campus is about 15 mins. Job is 25-30.

Didnt think id necessarily need a cert to go with mis. Id probably go for database admin

You don't NEED one... but it makes your degree mean a lot more. MIS programs are so different and a lot of them don't teach you any hard core coding languages. But the job market (for the better jobs) for people with MIS degrees seem to ask for some type of special technical skill, even if it's SQL, to get in the door. I regret 10 times over not getting an Oracle certification after I graduated (that's what our MIS program focused on). Now I'm working on getting an MS SQL Server cert.

I've been considering getting a technical master's degree as well, however I'm trying to see if I can get a company to pay for it.

My suggestion is to take that law money to get a couple certifications (you really only need certs to get a technical career started) and once you get a job offer for a technical position, make sure you're able to use tuition reimbursement (or whatever it's called).

Had the interview this morning. Went well until the end, i froze up when i was supposed to ask them questions. I had some prepared but idk what happened. They said they were interviewing a lot of people and wouldnt make a decision for a while. Luckily my fathers friend called them as a reference; he knew people in the law firm so he gave them a call. Either way im posted at the casino and drinking now. fukk it. Gonna travel all summer if i dont get it :manny:

If u get that bird in the hand, take it. U can also do school at night. At least u will be making money. Plus the law firm might offer tuition reimbursement.
