Why can't you pursue programming while working?

Software engineering is a crowded field. There are programmers on the job hunt for months/years and are still unemployed.

if he has a good portfolio he will be straight

OP only do it if you want to sacrifice 3-4 hours a day after work and on the weekends for a few months studying and making projects for a portfolio...

I'm not even sure if a portfolio even matters. The girl at HR doesn't have the time to comb through your github repositories. A portfolio may help you land a job at a smaller company. But the downside of working at a startup is the uneven hours (i.e.: unexpectedly be forced to work overtime, some times you may have to come in earlier than usual, some times they may call you in the middle of the night if theres a bug) and the stress from wearing multiple hats. (you won't JUST be a programmer. You'll be involved in other aspects of the company as well)

If you really love it, then sure. You WILL have to put in a ton of work outside of work, but if you're fine with that an you're persistent, then it can be a great career

Yeah the girl at HR might not but the IT manager probably will look especially if you don't have experience. OP has a degree in CompSci so he will get through the first HR screening but brehs without a Compsci degree the portfolio is the key to get in. Without professional experience with a nice portfolio it shows you can do the work. This has been my experience as self taught Web Dev though.
