Should Ice Cube's discography be questioned since he embellished like Rick Ross does?

You would have to apply this logic to 90% of the rappers out now. Cube is one of all time greatest storytellers

"Here's a lil' somethin bout a nikka like me
Never shoulda been let out the penitentiary
Ice Cube would like to say
That I'm a crazy muthafukka from around the way
Since I was a youth, I smoked weed out
Now I'm the muthafukka that you read about
Takin' a life or two, that's what the hell I do
You don't like how I'm livin' well fukk you"

No denyin' that...

But I was just wonderin' where the whole "Ice Cube was about Black Power" angle came from... not quite. He definitely covered more substantive topics, but the thing with him was that his approach was always half-"conscious"/half-street.

That said, yeah Rick Ross lied and isn't a drug kingpin. Nor was anybody else in rap who rhymed about it... and if they were, they prob. wouldn't have been rappin' about it. Yeah, Ross was a C.O.... what people fail to realize is that CO's are notoriously corrupt as fukk. There's CO's who look out for the inmates, look the other way when illegal shyt happens, assist in illegal shyt, some female CO's fukk inmates... all types of shyt. So it ain't like Ross was necessarily squeaky clean just cause he was a CO. If you had to rate rappers due to how true their lyrics/image was... a lot of nikkas' music would be discredited. A LOT.

Really?

Rick Ross' and Ice Cube are the same now?

REALLY?

Naw, not remotely the same. However I think it's a fair question to ask considering all of the scrutiny Ross gets since the CO past came to light. 90% of these rappers present images that don't truly reflect who they were or who they are. Why all the Ross hate when Dre ain't never did none of what he's ever rapped about, Cube ain't never did none of what he's rapped about, etc..

We can go on and on, and to me personally it really doesn't matter. Again the question was rhetorical. We can even flip the question and call into account Eric B's input on the early albums with Rakim as from what I recall he didn't do anything. But again I have to ask, does it really matter?

1. Rick Ross worked in law enforcement. That is a big difference from just "didn't do what he rapped about"

2. Ice Cube, Dre, KRS1, MC Eiht, Geto Boys etc etc all the classic gangster rappers rapped about the hood first. It was exaggerated and embellished for entertainment and shock value but at the end of the day it was storytelling and it was based on the actual environment that they grew up in (these guys were in their early 20s and late teens). It was creative expression based on actual experiences either theirs or someone elses...

3. Rick Ross is just 36 year old man playing a character. And thats cool. If a rapper wants to create a fake persona to perform under thats great. But he fronted like it was real and still does. So that makes him a clown.

Gangsta rap used to have parallels in reality and offered insight from the perspective of the writers. It definitely glorified negativity but it at least had a good excuse based on the environments that hip hop came from.

Nowadays it is almost exclusively based on materialism. I sell coke so I can buy Louis Vuitton. Trash.

Ice Cube telling stories about shyt in LA is a lot different than being a drug king pin in your rhymes but your past being a correctional officer. They are literally on opposite sides of the fence. A teenager/young man in the street talking about the street isn't on the other side of the line.

Does it really matter? No. That doesn't mean you can compare the two in any way tho.
