Since the league basically changed the criteria and enforced it starting from 1990 when Magic won the Mvp over Barkley. They made it clear that the emphasis would now be on winning. But because of that shift the better player who may have had the better season gets the short end of the stick. Case in point....Magic vs Barkley 1990
Magic = 22.5ppg, 11.5apg, 6.6rpg on 48%
Barkley = 25.2ppg 11.5rpg, 3.4apg on 60%
Magics team won 63 games and Barkley"s team won 53 games. Which is played a huge role in Magic winning it.
But Barkley had a better year...had the higher win shares and was probably even more valuable since he played on a team with way less talent.
If that award was in effect Barkley could have been rightfully honored for posting one of the most outstanding seasons ever....instead his efforts merely became a footnote.
Other example of players registering all time great seasons and not winning the MVP
Tracy Mcgrady in 2003 = 32.1ppg, 6.5apg, 5.5rpg on 46% (MVP winner = Tim Duncan) 30.27 per
Kobe Bryant in 2006 = 35.4ppg, 5.3rpg, 4.5apg on 45% (MVP winner = Steve Nash)
Chris Paul in 2008 = 21.1ppg, 11.6apg, 4rpg, 2.7spg on 49% (MVP winner = Kobe Bryant) 29.96 per
Dwayne Wade in 2009 = 30.2ppg, 5.0rpg, 7.4apg, 1.3bpg on 49% (MVP winner = Lebron James) 30.36per
Each of those players were the top performers in the league in their respective years yet didn't win. Of course winning is the main criteria for an MVP so I get it. But these are some of the great seasons in history and a player should be recognized for efforts like these.
This year more than ever it's apparent with players like Kawhi, KD, Harden ,Westbrook and even Lebron all having monster years. Yet only one will win and the other 4 will have their season forgotten.
Should these candidates have their season validated by an award?
