I think they do this if you're depositing into someone else's account. I believe it started in 2017

Into another persons personal account if it’s not a business account. It is to log all people who are buying crypto currency... and use/possibly use the dark markets. Don’t ask my why and how I know this

I've done it several times. I usually hand them my ID and my debit card anyways.
