NORWALK -- Calling his crime "brutal" and "vicious," Judge Gary White handed down a prison sentence of nearly two decades to a Bridgeport man, convicted of stabbing his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in their Norwalk home, Friday at Stamford Superior Court.

Divenson Petion continually interrupted White throughout the sentencing, at times aiming profanity-laced denials at the judge as he spoke. Petion was sentenced to 17 years in prison and three years of special parole after a jury found him guilty of two counts of first-degree assault and one count of violation of probation.

"This case involved the serious assault of two separate victims," said White. "The defendant intended to do serious physical injury to the primary victim in the case."

Norwalk Police say Petion showed up unannounced at his ex-girlfriend's Connecticut Avenue residence on May 26, 2012 and proceeded to assault her new boyfriend after entering the apartment. Petion kept telling the man, who was celebrating his birthday, to leave the home and at one point, he put the barrel of a silver revolver to the man's head, according to police.

Petion, who has a child with the female victim, then took out a pocket knife and slashed the man's face, causing a severe gash across the victim's left cheek, police said. Petion's ex-girlfriend was slashed in the left arm while trying to break up the fight, police said.

A 2-year-old child was sleeping on a couch near the area where the attack took place, but the commotion did not wake him up.

Petion then fled the area, and the victims went to Norwalk Hospital, where the male victim had to undergo surgery for his wounds, according to police. State's Attorney Maureen Ornowsky said Petion sliced the male victim's artery and if the victim did not drive himself to the hospital, he may have died. She said he has a permanent facial disfigurement and severe nerve damage from the altercation.

"Quite frankly, your honor, he's lucky he's not sitting here facing a murder charge rather than an assault first charge," Ornowsky said.

State Police filed an assaulting a peace officer charge on Petion in September 2013 after Petion assaulted a guard at the Bridgeport Correctional Center. He has pleaded guilty to the charge and is expected to serve a sentence concurrent to the one he received in Stamford for the Norwalk offense.

Petion spent more than two years in prison before posting bond the week before his trial. His bond was increased to $600,000 after the guilty verdict was delivered in his November 2014 trial, and he has remained in jail since the bond increase.

During Petion's sentencing, Ornowsky revealed that State Police are investigating a letter that Petion allegedly wrote from prison, soliciting the murder of witnesses in his case. Ornowsky said the letter demonstrates the "cold, calculated nature" of Petion, as in it he asks the addressee to kill the mother of his child but spare his daughter. The Department of Correction intercepted the letter before it could reach the addressee.

"He doesn't want anyone to hurt his daughter, but he wants them to hurt her mother and anyone who is around," Ornowsky said.

Barry Butler, who wound up representing Petion at the time of trial after he dismissed his previous three attorneys, said his client maintains his innocence. Butler revealed that Petion was shot twice in 2012 and spent two weeks in a coma.

Petion snorted while Ornowsky was speaking and later denied writing the letter, stating that the letter writer may have been "some dude I pissed off" while in segregated population at an upstate prison. He spent the remainder of his speaking portion of the sentencing denying all of the allegations against him and decrying all of the perceived injustices in his life, such as the fact that he cannot receive letters in prison from his fiancee.

"I'm not afraid of anything," he said. "I'm not guilty of anything."

White called the letter "obnoxious" and "reprehensible" and said the action "will no be tolerated." The judge said that even without writing the threatening letter, Petion deserves a lengthy sentence. He said the male victim in the case is in danger of losing his job, because his boss fears that "the violence propagated against him is going to spill over to the people he works around."

"He's done troubling damage to the primary victim in this case," he said.

He deserves the death penalty in my opinion. I wish the boyfriend would have killed him in front of his child.
