The Best Thing We Found This Week
Reading about famous explorers discovering new worlds is really interesting to me. Imagine setting sail on a wooden ship and having no idea what you’re going to bump into, if anything. Crazy, right? Sometimes it’s hard to look beyond their bravery and the excitement they must have felt and think about the ecosystems and lives that their discovery affected. Yes, these countries were discoveries for Cook, Columbus and Magellan, but they were home to others long before.

While there are amazing stories about lots of countries, this week we are focusing on Australia and New Zealand with the course Indigenous Studies: Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. You will study the past and present realities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia and Māori people in Aotearoa New Zealand. You will learn about the Aboriginal arrival more than 45,000 years ago, their 500 countries and over 260 languages; the discovery of these countries; the impact of colonisation and more.

This 4-week course, which starts on August 11th, will also look at what it’s like to be Aboriginal today, including the socio-economic disadvantage, political movements and contemporary social organization. Register today to gain a deeper understanding of these fascinating groups of people.
