Of course the ATL
1. How do you know he never bet against his team?
2. There's not a comparison of infractions to be made. Both are wrong and both damage the integrity of the game.

We don't know. All we can go off of is what has been reported so I'm not going to indemnify Rose for a crime we don't know if he committed.

I made a comparison of the infractions. I'm asking people which one is more damaging to the sport since we will have steroids/PED continue to receive votes for the HOF until one of them makes it in

according to that Dowd Report he was in heavy with the mafia over his bets. They were probably gonna force him to start throwing games at their behest to pay off the debt....so how do we know he wasn't doing that? That's what people don't seem to get as to why it's such a serious offense.

If someone is blatantly disregarding one of the leagues most flagrant rules, it stands to reason that you really can't trust what they say regarding their actions on that matter. Pete denied gambling for like 15 years, then came clean and said he only bet for his team :heh:

Imagine the message that would be sent if the commissioner were to exonerate him -- essentially others involved in the playing/managing of the sport could get away with manipulating the outcomes of games. I really can't think of a more damaging action for any league.

Baseball had one golden rule and he broke it. Then to make matters worse he lied about it. He might have gotten a lighter sentence if he came clean and threw himself on the mercy of the court.

I met Pete Rose in Vegas. I was walking around Caesar's Palace and saw he was doing a signing. There was no one in line to see him, but I marked out & got an autographed baseball from him :yeshrug:

I know it's not relevant to the thread, but Pete is a cool guy.

I dont want to hear Petes opinion on any baseball scandal tbh and yes he should be in the hall...but he has no integrity and his voice is meaningless on the PED stuff...

and it dont matter if he bet on his own team to win lol...A manager betting on games is a major black eye regardless...

The time of old fashioned pencil and paper record keeping is over. As long as the internet exist, and you can google Pete Rose, he doesn't need an official ceremony into the HoF. Have his records been omitted? Has he been erased from the league? Does he have an asterisk by his name? He's gucci then.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that he should be banned forever for betting on his team. IF, and that's a big if considering Rose's character, he only bet on his team & did nothing to damage the credibility or integrity of the game, I think a lifetime ban is too heavy handed. A big part of your reasons against Rose is b/c of things we don't know, but all we can go off of is what we know.

And if he was exonerated the message would be if you bet on baseball you're going to sit for a long time, be denied privilege to the game you love & have your credibility ruined. Look at Pete Rose. He's a shell of what he used to be. Him being banned took its toll & he continues to suffer every day he's not in the HOF or around MLB

You do realize Pete Rose bet ON his team to WIN right? He wasn't throwing games, he was overly confident that his team would win. Plus he did this as a manager, not a player. Pete Rose wasn't a HOF manager, but is clearly a HOF player. For those that think Pete should remain banned, let me ask you: What has done more to damage the credibility of baseball in the last 30 years? Pete Rose betting on games or the steroids/PED era?

In who's eyes? Most fans don't give too fukks about PED use and if they do they certainly aren't demonstrating it in a tangible way. Beyond that you are comparing one guy to something that was rampant. Now if it came out that gambling/game fixing was rampant I think fans would respond much stronger than they have thus far when it comes to PEDs.

Exactly.

There's a clear difference between a fan saying "I can't believe I paid to watch that player" from a fan saying "I can't believe I paid to watch that fixed GAME."

Fans will bypass a player they dislike that cheats than an entire game based on cheating for being fixed.
