A discussion needs to be had on a lot of "real Hip Hop" takes because a lot of them look funny in the light. "Real Hip Hop" is why Eminem is still considered Top 10 even if much of what he's released post 2009 isn't held in high regard. But because skills are hold more weight in a Hip Hop discussion, Eminem is a defacto Top 10 placement even if people don't really listen to his music.
The same goes for Hip Hop producers. Dilla is a defacto Top 10 producer. No knock against him, but I once asked what album he produced that is revered, artist that he cultivated that is revered and all I got in response was a De La Soul song he produced.
Maybe its a Detroit thing.
Then there's the knocks against GOATs. "Real Hip Hop" knocks Nas for commercial sounding songs and Illmatic by all accounts is the only acceptable answer to "GOAT Hip Hop album". LL isn't Top 10 because he made too many songs about women. Jay Z's music outside of Reasonable Doubt and Blueprint aged horribly because "Real Hip Hop" tells us that any music created on a keyboard has an expiration date.
