Gotcha. I'm not exclusively referencing the shutdown. 95% of democrats have rolled over and played dead, while Trump has virtually made congress invalid; Republicans too, for what it's worth.
Shutdowns favor the president. It's why Obama kicked republicans ass each time they tried. The problem this time is you have a president who is less interested in wielding that advantage in traditional terms (blaming the opposing party for payments not going out, suggesting that troops may not get paid, etc) and more interested in simply dismantling government. Oh it's shut down? I'll fire a bunch of people.
I've said it before but there's a long term danger here that could cripple government. Let's say dems win the WH in 2028 and start re-hiring government officials. If you're a former government worker in 2029....do you apply for that job again? Or do you say hell no, now knowing that it's very likely that if dems lose 4 years later you will be fired again? How do you make long term plans about your future in a new era where republicans gleefully shed government jobs the second they get into office. Now of course, maybe that doesn't happen. Maybe the imminent beat down republicans receive next month in Virginia (ie a state full of government employees) makes them say "maybe this was a bad idea." Who knows.
