So I was talking to my girl about the the slave trade that exists in Libya now after the fall of Qaddafi and she asked me why did Obama and particularly Hillary Clinton push for this so much?

I realized I don’t even remember he justification. Secondly it was a weird decision given that many democrats and liberals would argue that another despot in Saddam Husain would have been the preferred leader to the dysfunction in Iraq now and I realized this was as much a mistake for the same reasons as Iraq. But beyond Qaddafi being a “baddie” I couldn’t even remember why the Obama administration went after Qaddafi.

Someone refresh my memory.

Edit: I mention Clinton because if I remember the story correctly it was her that came up with the idea to go into Libya and Obama initially said no and eventually capitulated on the issue.

All jokes aside, most of the criticism comes from what happened after we intervened. Creating a presence like we did in Iraq/Afghanistan was extremely unpopular with the American People. Without falling for hindsight bias, at the time, I remember many people applauding the idea of letting Libyans determine how they'd govern themselves after deposing an authoritarian leader.

Yeah and hindsight is always 20/20 and I admit at the time it occurred I wasn’t really paying attention to the issue. But thinking back on it I remembering following Iraq and before even Obama came into Office, there was a strain of anti-interventionism in the liberal thought sphere. It’s like it disappeared or was marginalized during this.

We were on some we want to show you a better way, but not really get involved. A lot of pump faking. Obama seemed to have more hope for people that he should have. I think it was seen in his foreign and domestic efforts. That's not a compliment either.

The original claim:
The NATO campaign in Libya was initially aimed at saving civilians in Benghazi threatened by Libyan government forces, but the objective soon expanded to toppling Qaddafi.

The reason given in private correspondence:
Newly disclosed emails show that Libya’s plan to create a gold-backed currency to compete with the euro and dollar was a motive for NATO’s intervention.

The New Year’s Eve release of over 3,000 new Hillary Clinton emails from the State Department has CNN abuzz over gossipy text messages, the “who gets to ride with Hillary” selection process set up by her staff, and how a “cute” Hillary photo fared on Facebook.

But historians of the 2011 NATO war in Libya will be sure to notice a few of the truly explosive confirmations contained in the new emails: admissions of rebel war crimes, special ops trainers inside Libya from nearly the start of protests, Al Qaeda embedded in the U.S. backed opposition, Western nations jockeying for access to Libyan oil, the nefarious origins of the absurd Viagra mass rape claim, and concern over Gaddafi’s gold and silver reserves threatening European currency.

When did the U.S. or any other western nation need a reason to "intervene" in the affairs of 3rd world countries? They can and they will because Libya and the whole Africa ain't got no damn nukes or an army capable of standing their ground against the machine.

In conclusion, the strong bullies the weak because it can. :manny:

International policy and extremely complex situations in countries like Libya, are always going to have unintended, sometimes unexpected, vast and wide ranging. There are no easy answers for any of it. This is why we need people like Clinton, Obama in head of state positions, not the current admin.

Arab Spring popped off. Qaddafi was threatening to slaughter tens of thousands.
