A Texas College football player is accused of killing his girlfriend after he allegedly found out that she was actually a man.

Carlton Ray Champion Jr., 21, had been talking to Tyrone Lee Underwood, 24, through a mobile app for several weeks, under the assumption that the person he was talking to was a female, according to a Smith County arrest affidavit.

On the night of January 25, the two allegedly got into an argument about whether Champion was seeing someone else, the affidavit states.

Underwood, who went by the name “Tyra,” sent Champion a message indicating that she did not want to see him anymore, police said.

Champion responded, “I will make it up,” and the two decided to meet later that evening on a street near the college, according to court documents.

Hours later, around 2:30 a.m. on January 26, Tyler police received a call from a citizen regarding a vehicle.

Upon arriving at the scene, the officers found a red Toyota Camry off the roadway with a deceased black male in the driver’s seat, authorities said.

The officers interviewed nearby neighbors, who reported hearing several gunshots.

Interviews with the victim’s roommate and co-worker revealed that Underwood had been dating a football player at Texas College named “Carlton” for the past couple of weeks, according to court documents.

Police then went to the school and confirm Champion was a member of the football team.

Video surveillance from the college showed Champion leaving his dorm room shortly after 2 a.m. on January 26, and returning 15 minutes later, according to police. The slaying is believed to have occurred during the time Champion was gone, investigators said.

When presented with the video evidence, Champion denied leaving his dorm room, according to police. The jacket Champion was wearing that night tested positive for blood, according to the arrest affidavit.

During an interview with police, Champion’s father said that his son was supposed to get “some type of sexual favor from the victim but realized the victim was a male,” the affidavit reveals.

“After reading the texts between Champion and Underwood, it was clear that the two have had sexual relations with each other,” a detective wrote in the report.

Champion was charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Smith County jail on $1 million bond.

He has not yet retained an attorney, according to court officials.
