But every subway station has maps too!!!!How hard is it to say I am here at this station and I wanna go uptown/downtown...

The train was probably coming and he didnt have time to read it and wanted to catch the train just incase he was goinng the right way, which is why he held the train doors most likely. For a tourist they might take a min to understand the map
.The best option he could have did was ask somebody, the most simple way
