HIV/AIDS has existed for a lot longer than we're been aware, was likely in the country as early as the beginning of the 20th century, and people in various regions in Central Africa could possibly have had it for much longer.

The cases go back at least until the 50s documented, though not diagnosed and the disease is known by other names (especially in the Congo), I think they called it something that roughly translates as "skinny disease."
Not even to be rude, but you, like a lot of people (myself included at times) forget just how far Western medical advancements have gone in just a few decades, retrovirus testing is a new thing.
Prostitutes could have been dying of this disease since the 1920s, and no one would have known, in fact a young Black boy who was likely sex trafficked by American perverts died of complications of an early form of AIDS in the 50s.
Non medical people jump to conclusions (which with Western experimentation is definitely warranted), without having a full grasp, and simply going off of word of mouth.
