So It’s Official, Then? There’s No Such Thing As Biting Anymore?

This isn’t even a thread to “complain” or hate on Jay....I’m just trying to understand where hip-hop stands today on this concept.

So ere’body knows about that old video called “Swagger Jacker”, where Cam had somebody splice audio of rap lyrics from various artists with audio from Jay-Z pretty much saying the same lyrics:

Jay has always dismissed this as “paying homage to Big”, though.

Now, here is that “lost” Jay-Z video from his interview on Shade 45…..go to the 6:00 – 7:23 mark and listen to what he says about the Swagger Jacker song:

It went from “paying homage” to “everybody does it, it’s like sampling.” In his words, “I don’t do things differently than anybody else, I just do them better……it’s hip-hop, that’s what we do, we sample.”

And that's pretty much the PREVAILING sentiment these days.

I know it’s 2015 and certain tenets of hip-hop no longer apply (e.g., writing your own rhymes), but I never thought biting would be one of those tenets to be dismantled. Like, that always seemed like the most basic of principles in rap - don't take other people's shyt.

Mebbe hip-hop has moved into that same realm as other forms of music, where enough of an appreciation for it has been fostered to where "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"? :yeshrug:

But hell even THEN, like with a “cover” song, you do the WHOLE SONG, for the most part. You don’t just take a certain part of it.

I dunno...

:what:

Breh, if you made this thread already, my bad. But I didn't go searching through the forum before I posted it.

It's not that serious.

Listen mannn...

Even if you do come back, I don't believe you wrote it. You probably stole shyt from James brown in 66 and all that, stealing shyt from Frankie Lymonn B

The thing is, I'm a Nas fan...but..Jay rhymed with Biggie. He had him under his arm for a period of time and obviously had respect for him.

So far me, this is a moot point. I think this is literally him just giving dap to Biggie.

As for the other rappers :yeshrug:

Meek Mill just stole a WHOLE SONG from a teenage no name dude and TheColi didn't blink.

What we have here is the simple devolution of the rap game. Nikkas care about the gossip shyt more than the actual art of hip-hop.

Real simple.

Nikkas care more about their social media websites than rap.

These 90s nikkas, particularly the mid to late 90s ones, are straight up pariahs to the rap game. They suck everything up and give nothing back.

See, I don't get that.

Even if we concede the Biggie rhymes.....what about the Rakim ones? Nas? Snoop?

At what point is it past "paying homage"? Yunno?

Even if we don't accuse Jay of out-and-out biting, we can accuse him of, at the very least, VERY lazy rhyming.

Again, I just never understood people's position on this, which is EXACTLY what you just typed....no specific explanation, just the equivalent of :yeshrug:

I can agree with that. Like I said, basic tenets of the culture of writing and rapping have been shredded over the years to where even revering them is ridiculed, on some "you old ass nikka...."....no, how about I just hold the shyt in a bit higher regard than you, so why is that a problem for you? Yunno?
