Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand
That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
"Their colour is a diabolic die."
Remember, Christians, Negros, black as Cain,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.

I mean, one can appreciate the fact she is the first African American to be credited with publishing a book of poetry, but I wonder what would thecoli think of this?

And to get it out of the way…her owners taught her to read and write and encouraged her to write poetry. After they died she was freed and she married a white man or two and died destitute and unknown.

On the upside it has brought to my attention a lot of writers and figures that I would have otherwise ignored and glossed over. For all the shyt people on this board give cacs, John Brown was a real one and I’ve taken an immense liking to his disposition and power of will. Sadly, a lot of anti-slavery arguments seem to be simple exhortations and moral posturing and not a lot of action.

You just found out who she was this morning, and are likely repeating the Wikipedia entry.
:what:

I read a little something every day. I’m not on Twitter 24/7 looking for something to get angry about like some of yall. :russ:

But I will say I did find out about John brown today because I was reading about Henry David Thoreau.

You probably just saw that on Wikipedia, but thanks for the correction bro.
We learned about her in elementary school, probably one the 5-10 black writers who are included in most us literature courses…. You really missed out if you didn’t learn it before now
And you just learned about John Brown? Real talk how old are you? Are you still in school?

If I learned about any of that it was over twenty five years ago and long forgotten. I’m from Texas so I only remember having a superficial understanding of colonial America. I’m also an old head.

I just find it interesting the juxtaposition of a slave seemingly rationalizing the existence of slavery on an institutional level, giving credence to the idea that Africans were of a bestial stock and were saved by Christ and the white man. This is in stark contrast with someone like Frederick Douglass, whose fiery writings are incredibly pertinent to this day.

As for John brown, like I said before I was reading a few Thoreau essays, and amongst them was one about John Brown. I read Walden like 15 years ago so it’s been some time.
