Satsui no Hadou
CHICANO 🇲🇽 🇺🇸
Twas mercy brought me from my Pagan land,
Taught my benighted soul to understand
That there's a God, that there's a Saviour too:
Once I redemption neither sought nor knew.
Some view our sable race with scornful eye,
"Their colour is a diabolic die."
Remember, Christians, Negros, black as Cain,
May be refin'd, and join th' angelic train.
I mean, one can appreciate the fact she is the first African American to be credited with publishing a book of poetry, but I wonder what would thecoli think of this?
And to get it out of the way…her owners taught her to read and write and encouraged her to write poetry. After they died she was freed and she married a white man or two and died destitute and unknown.
On the upside it has brought to my attention a lot of writers and figures that I would have otherwise ignored and glossed over. For all the shyt people on this board give cacs, John Brown was a real one and I’ve taken an immense liking to his disposition and power of will. Sadly, a lot of anti-slavery arguments seem to be simple exhortations and moral posturing and not a lot of action.
